James McCaffrey, the voice actor best known for voicing the title character in the Max Payne video game series and a recurring role in Rescue Me, has died. He was 65.
According to multiple sources, McCaffrey died Sunday after a battle with cancer. McCaffrey was diagnosed with multiple myeloma, a type of cancer affecting bone marrow and white blood cells, according to TMZ, which first reported the news.
His wife, actress Rochelle Boström, told The Hollywood Reporter that McCaffrey died at his home in Larchmont, New York. His manager noted to Deadline that the actor was surrounded by family and friends at the time of his death.
Entourage star Kevin Dillon shared a tribute to his late friend on Instagram, writing, "We were lucky to have known you. My best friend you will be missed 🙏🏼."
McCaffrey's first roles date back to the late '80s and early '90s, with his breakout project being New York Undercover, Fox's cult classic police drama. He played the recurring role of Captain Arthur O'Byrne in season 3. He went on to star in NBC's action series, Viper, in its original iteration, which only aired for one season in 1994. McCaffrey reprised his role in the revival series a few years later.
Over a 35-year career, McCaffrey became a familiar face on episodic TV, appearing on Sex and the City, The Big Easy, Glades, Revenge, White Collar, Madam Secretary, Law & Order: Special Victims Unit and Law & Order: Criminal Intent, Bull and Suits, among many others.
His most memorable and haunting role came in the acclaimed FX drama Rescue Me. McCaffrey played Jimmy Keefe, a New York firefighter who died during 9/11 and appears as a ghost to his cousin, firefighter Tommy Gavin (Dennis Leary). McCaffrey's Jimmy appeared throughout the show's seven seasons, serving as a conscience and emotional touchstone for Leary's troubled, grieving firefighter.
In addition to his on-screen roles, McCaffrey is well-known for his voice work, especially in the gaming world. He voiced Max Payne — the avenging former NYPD officer turned DEA agent whose wife and daughter were murdered by junkies — in video game installments released in 2001, 2003, 2008 and 2012.
In addition to his wife, McCaffrey is survived by the couple's daughter, Tiarnan.
